HOUSEMAID ARRESTED FOR POISIONING AND STEALING JEWELLERY & OTHER VALUABLES OF ELDERLY COUPLES

With the arrest of one housemaid–cum-thief, Janak Puri Police has solved 05 cases of poisoning and house theft of elderly persons residing alone. The police has also recovered stolen jewellery worth Rs.5 lakhs approx. and cash amounting to Rs.17,000/- from accused lady.

INCIDENT, TEAM AND INVESTIGATION:

In the evening of 11.12.2018, a PCR call regarding poisoning of an elderly couple at C-5 Janak Puri was received at Police Station Janak Puri. Responding to the call, local police immediately reached at the spot and with the help of PCR, shifted the unconscious couple to DDU hospital. On preliminary enquiry, it was found that the couple has been given some unidentified substance by their recently hired maid and she had ransacked the house and decamped with jewellery and cash.

 

Thereafter, on the basis of statement of Ms. Natasha (maternal granddaughter of couple), a case vide FIR No. 572/18 U/S 328/380 IPC was registered at Police Station Janak Puri and investigation was taken up. During investigation, it was found that victim Pushkar Nath Kaul had randomly hired the maid for household work just a couple of days prior to the incident and there was absolutely no detail about her except her fictitious name Pinki. Therefore, to identify and arrest the accused, a special team consisting of Inspr. Kashmiri Lal, Inspr. Pawan Tomar, SIs Umesh Yadav, Dev Kumar ASIs Bijender, Vijay, Dev Kumar HCs Chandershekhar, Sandesh, Constables Girraj, Manjeet, Karan, Anuj & Parveen Rathi and W/Ct. Baby Rani was immediately constituted under the supervision of Inspr. Vijaypal, SHO/Janak Puri and overall guidance of Sh. K.S.N. Subudhi, ACP/Rajouri Garden. The team thus constituted, thoroughly surveyed the locality for CCTV cameras for clues. After scanning more than 100 CCTV cameras, the suspected lady was vaguely seen going towards Sagarpur.

Thereafter, the team got the footage developed for best possible resolution and prepared around 10,000 pamphlets for wide publicity in the localities of Dabri, Sagarpur, Bindapur, Uttam Nagar, Sitapuri, Kali Basti etc. as most of the housemaids used to come regularly from these areas to work in Janak Puri and Vikas Puri. The staff then fanned around in these areas and conducted door-to-door surveys. Members of eyes & ear scheme were also sensitized about the case.  In the meanwhile, the technical investigation was also launched for finding clues through analysis of mobile dump data of locality.

During investigation, it was also observed that incidents of similar modus-operandi were also reported in Vikas Puri and Janak Puri earlier also. Further leads about accused from complainants of these cases were also collected.

During investigation, conscientious and tireless efforts of police team bore fruits as information about suspect accused lady was received from a member of eyes & ears scheme. The information was worked upon and more clues were collected. Working on these clues, the police team conducted raids in District Begusarai (Bihar) and arrested the accused namely Reena @ Pinki @ Sarita w/o Durbal Paswan r/o Vill: Pakhol, PS: Tegra, Distt. Begusarai (Bihar) when she had fled from Delhi on getting a whiff about her search by police.

The search and arrest of the accused in this case shows that traditional form of human intelligence is very much relevant in modern times if it is properly buttressed by technical investigation.

INTERROGATION:

During sustained interrogation, the accused confessed about her involvement in the present case as well as three other cases of similar modus-operandi registered in Police Station Janak Puri vide FIR Nos. 352/17, 82/18 & 114/18 and one case in PS Vikas Puri registered vide FIR No. 622/17. In all these cases, the accused lady used to work for 2-3 days in households of senior citizens residing alone and then she would poison them and decamp with valuables. On her instance, jewellery worth Rs. 5 lakh and cash Rs. 17000/- has been recovered till now.  

Further investigation is in progress and efforts are being made to ascertain her other involvements and to affect more recoveries. The police team as well as the public persons, who helped in cracking the case, are being suitably rewarded.
